Salarier started inside Sri Anant Enterprises, where the monthly routine looked like most small Indian businesses: payslips assembled in a word processor, invoices in a spreadsheet, GST fields checked against a browser tab. It worked, in the way that carrying water in your hands works.

The alternatives were either templates with extra steps or enterprise suites priced for a finance department we didn't have. Nothing in between treated a five-person business as a real customer.

So we built the in-between: one system that knows Indian payroll and GST rules, produces documents that hold up, and doesn't meter every click. Then we made most of it free.
